Contrary to popular belief, silk is one of the most hard-wearing of natural fibres in spite of its ultra-fine gauge. However, silk fibre can lose up to 40% of its strength when it is wet, which makes it vulnerable to stretching. The washing of silk satin and any other silk fabric does require a few precautions. Remember that the lighter your fabric, the more delicate the washing process should be.
‘Maison de la Soie’ silk bed linen is made from the finest, 400 thread count mulberry silk yarn. It is silk satin of the highest quality that is tough enough to be machine washed at 30°C.
The care of your silk bed linen is not that complicated after all. Here is some advice to make sure that you enjoy your silk sheets for as long as possible.
Machine washing:
Wash your silk bed linen on the delicate cycle at 30°C and use a detergent for silk. Ideally you should use silk washing detergent which is a professional detergent, specially formulated for washing silk and containing no bleaching or whitening agents.
Tip: to protect the stitching and avoid any risk of stretching caused by the drum of your washing machine, wash your silk bed linen inside a cotton pillow case.
Hand washing:
Firstly, avoid rubbing, twisting or soaking silk.
Silk is an animal fibre and can be damaged by enzymes. Use lukewarm water (30°C) and a neutral detergent or one that is specially formulated for washing silk, such as silk washing detergent.
Rinse in lukewarm water to which you have added a few drops of white vinegar.
Dry by rolling the silk satin in a towel. Then lay it flat on a dry towel.
Ironing silk satin:
Iron on at a low temperature, preferably while still damp. Start with the reverse side without pressing too hard on the stitching. Do not use a steam iron and avoid rewetting the fabric. Lastly, finish by ironing lightly on the right side, if necessary.
Drying:
It is advisable to dry silk bed linen on a clothesline without using clothes pegs, away from direct sunlight and heat sources, such as radiators. Do not tumble dry.
Bleaching:
Bleach and all other whitening agents should not be used because they damage silk fibres.
